Our farms are independently audited on an annual basis by accredited, highly experienced individuals.
We are also involved in industry leading trials with retailers and universities to help drive wider transformative change in commercial farming welfare practice. These include improving the wellbeing of newly hatched chicks and more space for sows while breeding.
Vertical Integration
Our integrated production system gives us 100% control over our pigs health and welfare. Our outdoor reared pigs are both Red Tractor and RSPCA Assured and independently certified.
We also employ high welfare standards for our chickens, and we work with Compassion in World Farming and the Global Coalition for Animal Welfare to raise ethical standards across the farming sector.
Antibiotics
Our Wayland Farms division has been instrumental in leading the industry towards strategic vaccination which has lead to a more responsible use of antibiotics. The whole industry has reduced usage from 2015 to 2019 by well over 50%. Wayland Farms is below the industry 2020 target of 99mg/kg. Wayland Farms operates a closed herd and a high health pyramid to ensure all personnel, vehicles, livestock and feed lorry movements are not compromising the health of the pigs. The long term aim is to build our pigs’ natural immune system.
