CRANSWICK CONVENIENCE FOODS PACKAGING INNOVATION REMOVES 35 TONNES OF PLASTIC FROM THE SUPPLY CHAIN
Cranswick Convenience Foods has partnered with packaging company Coveris to replace all PET release liners with a carbon positive, recyclable alternative to significantly offset carbon impact in the cooked meat category.
Cranswick Convenience Foods has replaced all PET release liners with a new fibre based fully recyclable alternative from Coveris called RAFNXT+, the world’s first label material verified by the Carbon Trust.
The material is recycled after use via a sustainable partnership between Coveris and RafCycle® by UPM Raflatac. The UPM Raflatac RAFNXT+ material is returned to Coveris for recycling into a reusable liner for reapplication.
David Garbutt, Head of Purchasing, said, “Our partnership with Coveris is allowing us to remove 35 tonnes of plastic PET from the supply-chain. Not only that, the new material and recycling process support a CO2e saving of 20%, a reduced water consumption of 1.8 million litres, and a 6% energy saving. Enacting real, deep change takes time and it’s great to see this project coming to life.”
Will Mercer, Coveris’ R&D Director for Graphics, Label & Board also added “once again we have demonstrated that by working in partnership with the wider value chain, small changes can deliver huge environmental impact. Having seamlessly delivered a reduced carbon solution through our leading partnership with UPM Raflatac, we hope that other manufacturers recognise the carbon impact they can make through better label material choices and recycling partnerships.”
Collaboration is accelerating our climate journey, supporting our Science Based Targets and our Net Zero strategy.
More about plastic
We are on a mission to halve our plastic usage by 2025 and have already removed over 1,667 tonnes of plastic across the business since 2017.
Sometimes plastic packaging is necessary because it protects the product and keeps it fresher for longer, resulting in less food waste. However, sometimes plastic is over-used in packaging. This is why we’re working to become the first British food manufacturer to remove all problematic plastic from our business.
Where we can’t eliminate plastic, we want to ensure that it’s not only made from recycled plastic, but can be recycled again and again. This is why our collaboration with Coveris is so important, enabling us to recycle a plastic packaging stream, used in many of our products all across the business.
